Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek

The Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek, famously known as the “1000 Lake Trek,” or “Dagala Trek” is one of the most picturesque and rewarding treks in Bhutan. Please note that you need to add at least three additional nights to your Bhutan itinerary to complete this trek: two nights before the trek for essential acclimatization and one night after the trek before your departure from Bhutan.

Detailed Itinerary

Day Thimphu to Genekha to Gur

(Distance 7km, five hours, 550m ascent, 210m descent, camp altitude 3,290m)

Early morning drive to Genekha village (2850m) for 1 and half hours and you will cross a river across a suspension bridge. Your trek will start with a gradual ascent and after 2 hours, you will reach a huge rock platform, offering a picturesque view of the valley. After another 2 hours of trekking, you will reach the campsite. 

Day Gur to Labatama

(Distance 12km, six hours, 1,220m ascent, 110m decent, camp altitude 4,280m)

You will be trekking across meadows and crossing Pagalabtsa La Pass (4170m). From here you will get to see a good view of Kanchenjunga, the third highest mountain at 8,586m above sea level along with Bhutanese Himalayan peaks. Descending from the pass, you will pass by yak herders’ camp and reach Labatama valley. Continuing through valley, you will reach Utsho Lake . Continue towards the campsite (4280m).

Day Explore Labatma

(Camp altitude 4,280m)

A day halt in Labathama is highly recommended to explore the serene lakes-Reli Tsho, Hen Tsho, and Jama Tsho. Climb the Jomo Peak and enjoy the breathtaking view of the valley.

Day Labatma to Pangkha

(Distance 8km, five to six hours, 270m ascent, 520m descent, camp altitude 3,980m)

The trail starts on the western side of Dalatsho and ascends to a saddle at 4,520 meters, offering breathtaking views of Himalayan peaks during the descent. From this vantage point, at approximately 4,460 meters, you can admire a stunning panorama that includes Everest (Nepal), Kanchenjunga (Sikkim), Jumolhari, Jitchu Drake, Tshering Gang, Khangbum, Masa Gang, Tshenda Gang, and Gangche Ta. For an even more spectacular perspective, you can climb a nearby peak rising to 4,720 meters.

From the saddle, the trail descends past yak herder huts to Docha Chu. Following the river for a stretch, the path stays elevated on the slope, leading to Pankha with some ups and downs along the way. Camp for the night at Pankha, situated at 3,980 meters.

Day Pangkha to Chamgang to Thimphu

(Distance 11km, five to six hours, 720m ascent, 520m descent, camp altitude 4,030m)

Today is an easy trek and you will be crossing several passes. The place is known for different species of mountain birds. You will also see varieties of blue poppies. You will pass the last pass, Tale La (4185m). A short will you will reach Chamgang village where the car will pick you up and take you to hotel in Thimphu.
